B Corp?

Business as a Force For Good?

What is a B Corp and why is it a thing?

"The B Corp movement is one of the most important of our lifetime, built on the simple fact that business impacts and serves more than just shareholders -- it has an equal responsibility to the community and to the planet.”

Rose Marcario

CEO Patagonia

Certified B Corps are a new form of business that seeks to balance purpose and profit. This means that rather than solely focusing on profit maximisation, they consider the impact of their operations on their workers, customers, suppliers, community, and the environment.

B Corps are leaders of a global movement of business as a force for good.

They meet verified higher levels of:

1. Social and environmental performance

2. Transparency

3. Accountability

It achieves this by measuring the positive contribution that your organisation makes through the BIA or B Impact Assessment. It reviews your business against the 5 pillars of:

  1. Governance

  2. Workers

  3. Community

  4. Environment

  5. Customer Model

The assessment is a self-assessment and is completely free to take. You only pay to have your certification verified by a B Lab Standards Assessor. You will need to do that to get the certifiaction.

It's fundamentally a measure of the good that your business creates from its operations and business model. The B stands for Benefit. So beyond just your shareholders, what other benefit does your organisation have?

Why would I want to certify my business?

The Certification tool is a formula for helping you maximise the good that you can create in your organisation, it:

  • Is the most powerful way to build credibility, trust and value for your business.

  • Helps you explore, record and report your organisation's contribution across governance, workers, environmental, and social performance.

  • Gives you a benchmark against local, regional and global peers.

  • Proves you are working to be the best for the world!

Beyond a commitment and verification tool, it's also a movement, community and guide for maximising the impact that your business can make.

Ultimately it's about getting your business to be a genuine force for good by being best for the world, not just best in the world.

People want to work for, buy from, and invest in businesses they believe in and B Corp Certification is

the most powerful way to build credibility, trust, and value for your business amongst all stakeholders.

Walk the walk, don't just talk the talk. "Purpose Washing" and "Green Washing" a both rife in the market, but customers and employees are increasingly better at recognising "Purpose Lite". B Corp and a genuine purpose will see you gaining raving fans as a customer base.

Not only is this the 'right thing' to do, but it also makes economic sense as well. Research shows that

being a B Corp can add to your bottom line and profitability.

And as a bonus, you get to sleep well at night knowing you've done the right thing! #priceless.

How does the certification process work?

Need some help?

The BIA is hard for a reason - it's not a pay your money and get into the club. You need to meet the rigorous (but achievable) standards.

I work with many companies that want to become B Corp Certified but are lacking the:

  • Time

  • Internal resource

  • Know-how (the questions can be tricky)

When it comes to navigating your B Corp Certification I reckon I can help you on that journey. I'm a global expert in business for good, organisational purpose and creating impact led organisations and I regularly work with organisations in the US, Europe, Australia and New Zealand to help them Certify.

"A big thank you for all the time and effort that you put in to help us through the process. You seeded this idea a long time ago which set us on this path. Countless emails and hours of helping us get on track, especially in the early days, was instrumental in us getting to this point so thank you."

"Tim was a huge help to us in gaining our B Corp accreditation. He provided some good, practical advice on what we could expect throughout the accreditation process and some excellent tips on how to interpret and respond to some of the trickier areas. But most of all Tim gave us the confidence and inspiration to just get on and do it, when we could have spent many more months talking about it. I’d highly recommend Tim to any organisation thinking about embarking on the B Corp journey."
